UK Trade Talks with India reach "final but trickier" stage

This morning the BBC reported Government sources as stating that they hoped a deal with India could now be “months” away, while stressing that there were still some “big nuts to crack”.

In July, the UK and India completed their eleventh round of negotiations where detailed draft treating discussions took place over 9 policy areas.

This week, the Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch is visiting India for a meeting of G20 trade ministers. The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, is due to visit India himself in September though any hopes of completing the trade negotiations by this date seem to be very slim.

Latest figures show that the total trade in goods and services between UK and India was worth £36.3 billion in the four quarters to the end of Q1 2023. India is currently the UK’s 12th largest trading partner and is projected to become the world’s 4th largest global economy by 2030.
