Yesterday (30th September) the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) announced that, following a previous consultation period, they have decided not to proceed with the introduction of ‘not for EU’ labelling on a mandatory basis in Great Britain. This was due to be brought into implementation from today (1st October).
The labelling requirement would have impacted retail products across Great Britain and was originally seen as a method to ensure that there was no incentive for businesses to avoid placing agri-food products on the Northern Ireland market.
Despite saying that they will not proceed with the labelling requirement at the moment, the Government will take the powers necessary to apply ‘not for EU’ labelling in the future, if that is required to secure those supplies across the UK internal market.
