Last Friday (13th September) the UK Government announced an extension to the easement of import checks on medium-risk fruit and vegetables which has resulted in the easement now being in place until 1st July 2025 rather than the initial easement end date of January 2025.
Not only will these goods not be subject to import checks but they will also not be charged the associated fees until 1st July 2025. These fees include the Common User Charge which we discussed in the last edition of Horizon magazine.
Changes to risk categorisation:
DEFRA has also taken the opportunity to announce the change in risk categorisation to seven commodity codes (including apples and pears) which will effect on 30th January 2025. This change will see these products down-graded from medium risk to low risk which subsequently will allow these goods to move freely into GB from the EU, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
