Following the UK’s ascension to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) last year and ahead of its ratification in UK law, the Department for Business and Trade are seeking input from British businesses to help shape the evolution of the agreement.
The passing of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) into UK law is eagerly anticipated. It will offer duty-free trade on a wide range of exports to eleven key economies including Japan, Canada, Mexico, Vietnam, Singapore and Australia.
The agreement has been conceived as a ‘living agreement,’ which means it is subject to continual change to ensure its efficacy. As part of this commitment to its evolution, signatories to the agreement will hold a ‘General Review’ every five years in order to maintain the deal’s high standards and ensure it reflects and remains effective in the current climate.
To support this review process, the government is seeking submissions from interested parties on the following questions:
Which areas of the current CPTPP agreement should the UK government seek to keep the same through the CPTPP general review?
Which areas of the CPTPP agreement should the UK government seek to change or improve through the general review in line with the highest standard international trading practices?
Traders have until 22 February 2024 to submit their views and can do so here.
