Reducing Barriers for SMEs
The new deal could help reduce barriers by producing one set of global rules for digital traders. SMEs who export services rely on digital trade very day, but over the years differing rules over the use of client data have developed making it difficult for businesses. At the UN conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) it was suggested that the current fragmented data landscape poses risks of potential cyber attacks and privacy breaches.

The new international trade secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan highlighted the need for Britain to break down unfair discriminatory digital trade barriers to boost exports from its £150bn digital sector, in her first speech as minister, where she launched a Department for International Trade five-point plan for digital trade.
